ROSEMONT – The Rosemont College Athletic Department has named Robert Thomas the head coach for the men’s varsity golf program. “It’s exciting to be part of a brand new program,” said Thomas. “It’s going to be fun to build something from scratch.”

Thomas is no stranger to the area having coached at The Haverford School since 2005. He led the team to Inter-Ac Championships in 2005 and 2006 and had individual champions in 2008. “My experience at Haverford has just been wonderful,” Thomas added. “I’ve coached several teams there and have had good success with them as well. I learned how to communicate with the athletes which has helped in building successful programs.”

Thomas also brings a strong collegiate background as well having served as an assistant to the varsity basketball programs at University of Delaware and Widener University. “I was fortunate to have coached at both Widener and University of Delaware,” Thomas said. “Those experiences gave me a lot of the groundwork for organizing and maintaining a collegiate program. I worked with recruiting and admissions which will be very helpful to me in coming to Rosemont.”

Thomas attended St. Joseph’s University and received his Bachelor’s of Science in Sociology. While there, he was a two year member of the men’s baseball program. In addition, he earned a Professional Certificate in Program Design, Management and Assessment from the University of Pennsylvania and a Professional Certificate in Web Design and Management from Pennsylvania State University.

Thomas will recruit for the entire 2009-2010 year. “I feel very confident in recruiting,” added Thomas. “This area is a hotbed for golf. Almost every school in the area – public, private or parochial has a team. Rosemont can offer an opportunity to play and be competitive and have a great experience.”

The men’s golf program begins competition in the fall of 2010. “I hope to recruit some great student-athletes,” said Thomas. “If I can do that, everything else will fall into place. I want to get the team to a point where its competitive everyday and the student-athletes get a great experience.”
